2015 McLeish Estate "Auld Killie" - off-dry Semillon

McLeish Estate

Regardless of the intent behind producing this wine, my experience of off-dry Hunter Semillons is that they're "hit and miss".  Consistently one of the top Semillon exponents in the region, and with the services of the inimitable Andrew Thomas as winemaker, I can only assume the very experienced team at McLeish Estate have sought to bottle a wine worthy of being in their proud stable.

This is not the current release.  It is, however, still available for sale.  The author must admit to preferring these styles with a couple of years in the bottle.

The colour is as it should be for any Semillon of this age.  The nose - expressive and high-toned.  More sweetly struck than a traditional example from the same vintage.

The syrupy viscosity is true to style.  A fruit forward, and vivacious wine - hoping that acidity on the back palate freshens and demands another sip.  At 7.5% alc/vol - the fermentation was stopped before converting the sugars to alcohol.

While this sits firmly in the "for drinking, not thinking" realm, it's a clean and well-crafted wine that would provide great relief at the Cellar Door amidst the bone-dry young semillons and medium-weight, sinewy reds on the Hunter trail.
